The Soap Maker of Correggio

Happy True Crime Thursday True Crimers!
For today's story we are going to take a trip outside of the U.S. to Italy.
Where we will be discussing the ever so lovely Leonarda Cianciulli,
AKA The Soap Maker of Correggio.
Don't worry this didn't turn into a how to blog....

Leonarda Cianciulli mugshot.jpgLeonarda was born April 18, 1894 in Montella, Avellino a small Province in South Italy. She had a rocky upbringing. Leonarda was a product of rape. Her mother Emilia was forced to marry her rapist after it was discovered she was pregnant. Her father died when she was pretty young and her mother remarried. They were very poor and to top it off her mother was frequently emotionally abuse. Leonarda attempted suicide twice, but she dreamed of the day she would marry the man of her dreams and in 1917 she did just that. She married Raffaele Pansardi who was a registry office clerk. To put it lightly her mother wasn't happy about this marriage. She had planned for her to marry another man, a wealthy man. On a not so light note her mother in return put a curse on the newly married couple.

The newlyweds moved to Raffaele's native town of Lauria.  They had financial troubles from the beginning, but it became much worse once they started to have children, they couldn't support their growing family. In 1927 Leonarda was arrested for fraud and went to prison. After she was released her and her husband wanted a fresh start so they decided to move the family to Lacedonia. In 1930 their home was destroyed in an earthquake, so again the family had to up and move, this time settling in Correggio.

It was here that the family finally started to gain some financial security. Leonarda even opened up herself a small soap shop that was widely received by the community of Correggio. Even though things started to look up, the family wasn't free of tragedy. Leonarda had 17 pregnancies, she lost 3 children due to miscarriages and ten died in their youth. Understandably she was protective over her 4 remaining children, maybe a little to over the top protective. She was a superstitious woman and believed that the curse her mother put on them was real. She was very much into fortune telling and palm reading. A fortune teller had once warned her that she would have children, but they would all die young. She reportedly met another palm reader that told her that she saw prison in her right hand and a criminal asylum on the left.

In 1939 World War II had broken out and Italy was looking to enter war on the side of Germany. Her eldest son had been designated to be part of the Italian Army, Leonarda was petrified for his safety and wanted to protect him. So what better way to do this than a little human sacrifice. While Leonarda liked going to fortune tellers she also earned the reputation of being one herself. She met her sacrifices this way, they would come to her seeking advice.

Her first victim was a middle aged single woman named Faustina Setti that was looking for a husband. She came to Leonarda, it was then that she was told that her suitable partner was in Pola, but to not tell anyone about it. Leonarda told her to write letters and postcards to her family and friends so they could be sent once she reached Pola to let them know everything was fine. On the day of Faustina's departure she came to say goodbye to Leonarda. It was then that Leonarda drugged her via their celebratory wine. She then murdered her with an ax once she fell unconscious. She pulled her body into a closet, hacked it into 9 pieces and collected the blood into a basin.  Per a statement later given to authorities she then threw the pieces into a pot, added seven kilos of caustic soda, and stirred until the mixture had turned into a thick, dark mush. She then poured it into several buckets and disposed of it in a nearby septic tank. As for the blood in the basin she let it coagulate before drying it in an oven, grinding it and then mixing it with flour, sugar, chocolate, milk, eggs and margarine to make teacakes. She gave some of these teacakes to visiting women and the rest were eaten by herself and her husband. Some sources state that Leonarda received Faustina's life savings as payment for her services.

Her 2nd victim was Francesca Soavi, Leonarda told her that there was a job at an all girls school in Piacenza that was meant for her. Leonarda told her not to tell anyone and convinced her to write postcards to be sent detailing her plans. Again just like with Faustina, Francesca came to say goodbye to Leonarda, she too was drugged and then killed with an ax, and the same steps were taken with her body. Leonarda received a good portion of money from her as well.

The 3rd and final victim of Leonarda was Virginia Cacioppo. With Virginia she was a former soprano and loved music, Leonarda told her that there was work as a secretary for a impresario (a person who organizes concerts, plays or operas) in Florence. Just like with the first two she told her not to tell anyone where she was going. And like clockwork Virginia showed up at Leonarda's door to say goodbye. I think we all know what is set to happen next...but then a game changer happens, this time instead of making her teacakes she melted Virginia's body to make soap. Leonarda at one point said "She ended up in the pot, like the other two...her flesh was fat and white, when it had melted I added a bottle of cologne, and after a long time on the boil I was able to make some most acceptable creamy soap. I gave bars to neighbors and acquaintances. The cakes were better, that woman was really sweet." Ok....did ya'll just gag a little like i did? These people unknowingly were cannibals and were washing themselves with boiled up body parts. Leonarda also received a substantial amount of money along with assorted jewels from Virginia.

Virginia's sister in law didn't buy the story and was very suspicious. Since she was last seen entering Leonarda's home that's where police went. They arrested her, but she didn't confess at first. It wasn't until they believed that her son may have been involved that she started forking up the details and confessed. She was tried for murder in 1946. She was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years in prison and 3 years in a criminal asylum....just like the palm reader told her.

Leonarda died of a brain hemorrhage in 1970. If you are a weirdo like me and are taking a trip to Rome check out the Criminological Museum. Here they have a number of artifacts from the case, including the pot she boiled her victims in.

Well there you have it folks, the story of The Soap Maker of Correggio. See you all next week!

Without a Trace

Happy True Crime Thursday True Crimers!
Today I'm going to cover a mysterious disappearance... and 8 years later there is still no answer.
No answer as to what happened to Lauren Spierer.

Image result for Lauren Elizabeth Spierer

In the early morning hours of June 3, 2011, bubbly and outgoing 20 year old Lauren Spierer vanished without a trace in downtown Bloomington, Indiana.

Lauren was born in January of 1991 to Charlene and Robert Spierer in Upstate New York. She grew up in Scarsdale. She was born into a Jewish family and was very active in the Jewish community at school. She spent one of her spring breaks planting trees in Israel on behalf of the Jewish National Fund. She attended a summer camp called Camp Towanda in Pennsylvania, it was here that she met her boyfriend Jesse Wolff and became good friends with Jay Rosenbaum. All 3 of them ended up attending Indiana University together in 2009 and remained close.

Now I'm going to give you a timeline of the events that took place on June 3, 2011. This timeline is put together based upon surveillance camera footage and the accounts of the people who were with Lauren during various times in the very early hours prior to her disappearance.

* 12:30 a.m.- Lauren left her apartment at the Smallwood Plaza Apartments with her friend David Rohn. The two of them walked over to her friend Jay's town home not to far away, there they met up with Jays neighbors Cory Rossman and his roommate Michael. Lauren's boyfriend Jesse did not go out with her, but he was texting with her until he went to sleep.

* 1:46 a.m.- Lauren and Cory leave Jays house and are seen entering Kilroy's Sports Bar where Lauren uses a fake ID to get in.

* 2:27 a.m.- Lauren and Cory are seen exiting the bar. Lauren accidentally leaves her cell phone and shoes at the bar. She had taken her shoes off because Kilroy's had a sand covered patio. The 2 of them walk to Lauren apartment complex.

* 2:30 a.m.- Lauren is seen entering the complex, where a passerby (also an acquaintance of her boyfriend Jesse) Zach Oakes notices that Lauren is very intoxicated at this point and asks her if she is okay. It's at this point that an altercation breaks out between Zach and Cory.

* 2:28 a.m.- They leave the apartment complex for reasons unknown. Lauren enters an alley that runs between College Avenue and Morton Street. Security cameras show her exit the alley and walk towards an empty lot. Lauren's keys and purse were found along the route through the alley. At one point a witness saw Lauren sit down on a step and fall backwards, hitting her head on a concrete step. After they started walking again she lost her balance and fell for a 2nd time hitting her head on the ground without using her hands to guard her face. Cory picked her up and began to carry her.

* Lauren and Cory arrive at his place shortly after. His roommate Michael is still up. He states that Cory was very intoxicated and stumbling. He was heading upstairs when he vomited on the carpet, Michael escorted him to his bed. He tried to convince Lauren to stay at their place for her own safety, but she said she wanted to return to her apartment and asked him to come with her so they could continue to party.

* 3:30 a.m.- Michael calls his neighbor/Lauren's friend Jay asking to take care of her. She went over to Jays. He noticed a bruise under her eye and asked where she got it from, she told him she didn't know how she got the bruise. Presumably is was from one of the falls earlier. Lauren borrows Jay's phone and made 2 phone calls, one to David from earlier and one to another friend. Neither of them answered and she didn't leave a message. Jay tried to get her to stay at his place.

* 4:30 a.m.- Jay was unable to convince Lauren to stay longer, she left his place and that was the last reported sighting of her. Jay stated he told her that if she was able to walk steadily one block that he felt she was ok enough to walk home. She was able to. He last saw her at the intersection of 11th Street and College Avenue heading south on College. She was last seen barefoot, in black leggings and a white t-shirt.

*A few hours later Lauren's boyfriend Jesse sends her a text. He received a reply, but it wasn't from Lauren. It was from an employee at Kilroy's Bar. Jesse reported Lauren missing.

Last sighting of Lauren

Now that you have a timeline of the events leading up to her disappearance i'm going to give you some facts about Lauren and then i'm going to give you some theories as to what happened to her.

Lauren was a small petite woman, she was 4'11" and weighted 90 pounds. She suffered from a heart condition called long QT syndrome that she took medication for everyday. The condition is known to increase the risk of irregular heartbeat, with that it can result in palpitations, fainting or sudden death.
Jay stated to police that on top of her consuming alcohol that she also did cocaine and crushed up Klonopin that morning.

Here are some theories;

When something happens to someone, most of the time it's by someone that they know...

The first and most talked about theory is that Jay, Michael and Cory know more than they are leading on. That Lauren died that morning while with them and they were afraid of getting in trouble for drug possession so they covered up her death. There are a number of factors that could have lead to her death; the multiple falls/hits to the head, the mix of drugs/alcohol and her heart condition. Here's some issues people have with this theory. Cory states he cannot remember what happened that morning, which isn't all that surprising because he was extremely intoxicated and took a few hits during the fight he was in. It would be difficult to believe that he had anything to do with it. If they tried to cover up her death because of the drugs then why would Jay have told police about Lauren even doing cocaine? There has never been any trace evidence found that point to them. They would have had a short time frame to clean up any evidence and to dispose of Lauren's body. Massive searches were done and nothing was found. They fully deny any involvement.

Now on to Lauren's boyfriend Jesse. His roommate states that he witnessed Jesse go to bed right around 2:30 that morning after staying in to watch the NBA finals. What is strange to people is that Jesse was involved in searching for Lauren following the days after her disappearance, but his parents ended up pulling him off of the search. Jesse's mom even slandered Lauren to the press, talking about how Lauren had a drug problem. Now this is not saying he was involved in anything, but it shows odd behavior from his parents.

Although uncommon, but not completely ruled out is that a stranger was involved.

There have been theories out there that Lauren could possibly be tied to other cases. David Messel was arrested in 2015 for the murder of IU student Hannah Wilson. Several women came forward to say that they had been sexually harassed or assaulted by Messel. He had a long history of violence.  He was charged for the murder of Hannah and the attempted rape of another IU student in 2012 that they were able to prove with DNA Evidence. His MO was to talk to young girls that were under the influence and try to convince them to get in his car. Lauren was within the area that he liked to lurk. Of course as we know, there is no evidence of any involvement.

Lauren Spierer is presumed dead, but that doesn't mean that her family has given up. 8 years later they are still desperate for answers as to what happened to Lauren that morning. Police have gone through a number of leads without any luck.

What do you guys think? Do you think that her death was covered up? Do you think that a stranger had something to do with it? Do you feel like it's tied to other cases?

Hopefully someday in the near future we all can get an answer.

Police and Lauren's family urge anyone with information to contact investigators at 812-339-4477

See you all next week!

Killer Clown

Happy True Crime Thursday!
Let me just say this...
the title for this weeks blog is literally what my nightmares are made of.
This week were are talking about John Wayne Gacy AKA The Killer Clown.
You might want to grab a drink for this one because you're going to need it....

John Wayne Gacy

Young John Gacy
John Wayne Gacy was born on March 17th, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Marion Robinson and John Stanley Gacy. He was the middle child and the only boy in the family, he was very close to his sisters and mother, but the relationship with his father was another story. One of his first memories of his father being abusive was when he was 4 years old. His father beat him with a leather belt for accidentally disarranging car engine components that his father had assembled. On another occasion he was struck across the head with a broomstick and it rendered him unconscious. He wanted nothing more than to make his father proud, but seldom did he ever receive any praise. He regularly was called dumb and stupid by him and that he would never be good enough. John's mother tried to shield him from the verbal and physical abuse, but this only added fuel to the fire, his father called him a "Sissy," a "Mama's boy" and told him that he would probably grow up to be queer. In 1949, Gacy was molested by a family friend, he was a contractor who would take him for rides in his truck, then fondle him. He never told his father about the incidents in fear that his father would blame him.

Gacy's Parents
In 1962, Gacy left the family home and drove to Las Vegas, Nevada. He worked as a mortuary attendant and slept on a cot in the embalming room. One night while he was alone he climbed into the coffin of a deceased teenage male, he embraced and caressed the body, then he experienced a sense of shock over what he was doing. He called his mom the next day to ask if he could come home, he only worked there 3 months before heading back to Chicago. Despite failing to graduate high school, he was able to enroll in the Northwestern Business College and graduated in 1963.

Gacy ended up working at the Nunn-Bush Shoe Company and was eventually transferred to Springfield where he worked in sales and was eventually promoted to management. Gacy became involved with the local Jaycees and dedicated a lot of his spare time to the organization, he rose through the Jaycee ranks. In 1964 he began dating a coworker by the name of Marlynn Myers, just 9 short months later they were married. He was thriving in life....but couldn't help the thoughts that started accumulating in his mind, the want to be sexually involved with teenage boys.

John and Marlynn

Marlynn's father purchased 3 Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in Waterloo, Iowa, soon Gacy and his bride moved there so Gacy could manage the restaurants. Him and Marlynn ended up having 2 children, a boy and a girl. Gacy joined the Waterloo Jaycees and quickly moved up the ranks, in 1967 he received recognition as "Outstanding Vice-President" and earned a seat on the Board of Directors.  Unlike the Jaycee in Springfield the one in Waterloo had a dark side. There was illegal drug use, wife swapping, prostitutes, and pornography. Gacy didn't hesitate in joining in these activities. he also began to act on his desires to have sex with male teenagers, most of them worked at the KFC's he managed. He regularly was cheating on his wife. Around this same time Gacy decided to open up a "club" in his basement for young boys, where he allowed them to drink. Homosexual rumors swirled around town about Gacy, but those closest to him didn't believe it. He was an outstanding citizen and had the perfect life.

In March of 1968, the perfect life came to a halt. Two boys from town ages 15 and 16 accused Gacy of sexually assaulting them. Of course Gacy stated he was innocent and would beat the charges. In August of 1968 Gacy hired another teen to beat up one of his accusers, this teen was caught and confessed everything. Gacy was arrested, he was convicted of sodomy and sentenced to 10 years in the Iowa State Penitentiary.  His wife quickly filed for divorce, Gacy never saw his children again. While in prison his father died on Christmas Day 1969 from cirrhosis. Gacy was paroled in 1970 after only serving 18 months! He moved back to Illinois, he moved back in with his mom and took a job as a chef. In 1971 with the help of his mothers finances he bought a home at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue. Just keep in mind a little fact for later, the house had a four foot deep crawl space.

February 12, 1971 a teenage boy claimed that Gacy picked him up and tried to force him into sex. The complaint was dropped when the teen didn't show up for court. The Iowa Board of Parole did not learn of this, so Gacy was discharged from parole in October 1971. So if this hasn't been infuriating to you yet let me just tell you...on June 22, 1972 Gacy was arrested and charged with battery when another teenage boy came forward saying that Gacy lured him into his car and forced him into sex....charges were dropped.

This is just a whole lot of HELL NO!

Gacy became a part of a "Jolly Joker" clown club whose members would perform at fund-raising events and parades. Gacy created his own clown characters "Pogo the Clown" and "Patches the Clown" He designed his own costumes and taught himself how to apply the clown makeup. He performed at several parties and charitable events.

John and Carole
Gacy got married June of 1972 to Carole Huff, an acquaintance from his teenage years. Carole and her 2 daughters moved in with Gacy. In 1975 Gacy started his own business (PDM Contractors) a construction company. It was also during this time that Gacy started staying out all night. His marriage began to deteriorate. Carole found wallets with the ID's from young men lying around, and Gacy began bringing gay porn into the house. They divorced in March 1976.

After his divorce and for the next couple years neighbors stated that Gacy had some odd behavior. They would hear his car arrive and depart in the early morning, lights switching on and off in his home at odd hours and him keeping company with young males. He also seemed to have a particular kind of employee to work for him...teenage males.

By December 12, 1978 Gacy would find himself in trouble again. A teenage stock boy at a local pharmacy by the name of Robert Piest went missing. Gacy was the last known person to be seen with the boy prior to his disappearance. When they ran a background check on Gacy they were surprised to discover he had previously served time for committing sodomy on a teenage boy. With this knowledge they were able to obtain a warrant to search Gacy's home. The first thing that police noticed was a rancid odor. The smell was the strongest in the crawl space, the ground seemed to be untouched and was sprinkled with lime, they believed the smell was from faulty sewage lines. They didn't notice any incriminating evidence, so they returned to headquarters to run tests on some items they took into evidence. During review of the items they discovered they in fact had seized a piece of critical evidence. A ring found in Gacy's home belonged to another teenager by the name of John Szyc who had gone missing earlier that year. They also discovered that three former employees of Gacy's had also mysteriously disappeared. With this coming to light they were able to obtain a second warrant to search Gacy's home. This is when they discovered Gacy was much more sinister than they possibly could have imagined.

Investigators returned to Gacy's home. Gacy finally confessed to police that he did kill someone, but said it had been in self-defense. He said that he had buried the body under his garage, he showed them where. They marked the site in the garage, but were more interested in the crawl space. It wasn't long before they discovered a suspicious mound on dirt. They started digging. Soon they found the remains of a body. They called Cook County Medical Examiner Dr. Robert Stein in that evening to help with the investigation. When he arrived he immediately recognized a very familiar odor to him...the smell of death. He organized a search for more bodies by marking off the areas in sections, it looked like the site of an archaeological dig. He knew that they had to take precaution when digging to preserve the integrity of the remains and the grave site. The digging went on all night and for many many days.

Crawl Space
By December 22nd Gacy finally confessed to the police that he killed at least 30 people and buried most of the remains in the crawl space. He stated he would lure his victims into being handcuffed, he would sexually assault them, to muffle the screams he would stuff a sock or underwear into their mouths and ultimately kill them by pulling a rope or board against their throats...as he raped them. He admitted that he sometimes would keep a body under his bed or in the attic for several hours before he buried them in the crawl space. WHAT A SICKO!

By the 29th of December police had removed a total of 27 bodies. They soon discovered that Gacy had also dumped bodies in the Des Plaines River and the Illinois River. They were tied to Gacy because of personal items found in his home. Gacy said he did this because he was running out of room in his crawl space and he had been experiencing back problems from digging the graves.

Floor plan of home and where bodies were discovered
By end of February police were still digging up Gacy's property, they gutted the house and the entire crawl space. They believed there were still more bodies to be found and they weren't wrong. They discovered bodies under the concrete patio, under the recreation room, and under the garage. By the time police were done the home was destroyed and reduced to rubble. They worked hard to identify all the victims, all but nine were identified.

Gacy was indited for 33 murders and was found guilty and sentenced to death by lethal injection.

On May 9, 1994 Gacy received his last meal; a bucket of KFC original recipe chicken, french fries and strawberry shortcake washed down with a coke. Just after midnight Gacy was executed, but not before saying his last precious words of "Kiss my ass." What a gem.

There is so much detail to this case you guys, I could go on and on forever!
This story just confirms that clowns are not to be trusted.
See you guys next week!

The Amber Alert

Happy True Crime Thursday True Crimers! This weeks story is a truly sad one, but in light of a tragedy a system was put into place to help others going through similar situations. Today i'm covering the story of Amber Hagerman, the inspiration behind the Amber Alert.

Image result for amber hagerman
In January 1996, 9 year old Amber Hagerman and her 5 year old brother Ricky  went to Arlington, Texas to pay their grandparents Glenda and Jimmy Whitson a visit along with their mom Donna.  On the afternoon of January 13th around 3 pm the kids asked if they could go on a bike ride, Donna said yes without a second thought. They rode to the abandoned parking lot of a Winn-Dixie grocery store. A bike ramp set up by local kids was used often in that parking lot. After Ricky had his fun he was ready to go back, Amber wanted to stay and told Ricky to go on without her. Little did he know that this would be the last time he saw his sister.

Amber's Grandpa Jimmy became worried when Amber didn't come back home shortly after Ricky did, he got into his car and rushed over to the Winn-Dixie. When he arrived police were there, a man named Jim Kevil had called them, he had witnessed Amber being abducted. Shortly after Ricky left a black pickup truck pulled up and a young man took advantage of Amber being alone. He forcefully dragged her into the truck, she kicked and screamed, but he was able to successfully take her within seconds. Jim had called the police immediately after witnessing this happen from his backyard, he said the man took off west of Arlington.

Amber's family quickly started handing out and hanging up flyers, they called local newspapers to have Amber's face put on the front page, and her mom went on television to plead to the stranger who took her daughter to set her free. Sadly that day didn't come.

Four days after Amber was abducted her body was found less than 5 miles away from where she was abducted. A man was walking his dog when the dog began to bark loudly and pulled the leash towards a local creek behind an apartment complex. This is where he discovered the nude body of Amber. The autopsy revealed Amber was held captive for 2 days after her abduction. It was also discovered that she was continuously sexually assaulted before her murder, her cause of death was a deep wound to the neck.  Unfortunately any evidence to help solve her case was washed away, a very large storm had come through causing the creek to rise rapidly. Today Amber's murder is still unsolved.

Amber's parents pushed to have stricter laws governing predators and sex offenders. Soon they established P.A.S.O (People Against Sex Offenders,) they received almost daily coverage in the local media and the donations came flooding in. Congressman Martin Frost drafted the Amber Hagerman Child Protection Act. President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law, creating the National Sex Offender Registry.

A woman named Diane Simone, a mother herself,  phoned into a Dallas radio station and asked "If you can interrupt programming and alert us of severe weather at any given time, why can't you immediately report when a child has been abducted?" Perhaps if the community had known Amber had been abducted and was aware of the suspect and vehicle description, Amber could have been located before she was killed.  This idea soon spiraled into something greater, and the nationwide Amber Alert System was created in Amber's honor in 1996. The program is currently used in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Indian country, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and 22 other countries.

Since 1996, Arlington law enforcement has investigated up to 8,000 tips regarding Amber's case. None of them have opened any valuable leads. Lead detective Ben Lopez says he's still holding out hope that one day there will be an arrest. "There's a possibility that someone knows something and just hasn't come forward for some reason...I certainly hope that's the case."

In 2016, 20 years after her daughters abduction/murder Donna did an interview where she stated "It's a shame my daughter had to be butchered and had to go through what she went through for us to have the Amber Alert, but I know she would be proud of it." "There's another part of me that wonders what would have happened if we would have had the alert when Amber went missing. Could it have helped bring her back to me?"

Sadly we will never know.

According to the Amber Alert Website, 957 children have been rescued because of the Amber Alert system as of April 2019.

* If you or anyone you know has any information about the death of Amber Hagerman, or who is responsible, please call the Arlington Police Department at 817 274-4444.  Anonymous tips may also be reported to the Tarrant County Crime Stoppers at 817-479-TIPS (817-469-8477).

Co-Ed Killer- FBI's Most Helpful Serial Killer

Happy True Crime Thursday fellow True Crimers! I have one for you this week that makes you feel a certain kind of way. I'm not going to get into that until the end, but I would love your feedback after you read it.

* Disclosure- This weeks story is a bit graphic, I put a * next to anything that is graphic as a warning, it will also have one at the end to let you know the graphic part is over.

Image result for ed kemperEdmund Emil Kemper III was born December 18th, 1948 in Burbank, California weighing 13 pounds at the time of his birth. His parents were Edmund Kemper II and Clarnell Kemper, Edmund II was a World War II veteran who later said that suicide missions in wartime were nothing compared to living with Clarnell. So it's probably no surprise that they separated in 1957. Ed was devastated by his parents separating, he had a close relationship with his father, but ended up being raised by his mother in Helena, Montana. Clarnell was a monster, she was a neurotic, domineering alcoholic who's favorite pass time was to belittle, humiliate and abuse Ed. She often made him sleep in a locked basement. She regularly mocked him for his large size (he was 6ft 4in by age 15,) she refused to coddle him for the fear that it would "turn him gay." Ed said that she would tell him that he reminded her of his father and that no woman would ever love him, Ed later described her as a "sick angry woman." Clarnell was such a peach wasn't she?

Ed had an IQ of 136, but definitely exhibited antisocial and psychopathic behavior. *At the age of 10 he buried a pet cat alive, once it was dead he dug it up, decapitated it and mounted its head on a spike, he later stated that he derived pleasure from successfully lying to his family about killing the cat. At age 13 he killed another cat with a machete and kept the pieces in his closet.*  He would perform bizarre sexual rituals with his younger sisters dolls that culminated in him removing their heads and hands. When his older sister found out that he had a crush on one of his teachers she asked why he didn't try to kiss her, his response? "If I kiss her, I'd have to kill her first." As a kid my favorite games were Twister, Operation, Candyland.... Ed's favorite childhood games were "Gas Chamber" and "Electric Chair." He would have his younger sister tie him up, flip an imaginary switch and he would topple over and writhe on the floor, pretending to die of electric shock or gas inhalation.

At age 14 he decided to run away from home, he went to Los Angeles in attempts to reconcile with his father. He found that his father had remarried and had a stepson. He stayed for a little while until he sent Ed to live with his Grandparents, Edmund and Maude Kemper on their ranch in North Fork, California. Ed referred to Maude as being constantly emasculating to him and to his grandfather, his grandfather was "senile" according to Ed.

August 27th, 1964, Maude was working on her latest children's book when her and Ed got into an argument. Ed was enraged, he left the room, grabbed the .22 caliber rifle his grandfather had given him for hunting and returned to the kitchen. Maude told him to not shoot any birds...well he didn't...instead he fatally shot her in the head before firing 2 more times into her back. When Edmund came back home Ed went outside and fatally shot him in the driveway before he had a chance to see what happened to his wife. In a state of confusion and panic he called his mother, who told him to call the police. He did just this and waited at the ranch for them to come. When he was questioned by police he said "I just wanted to see what it felt like to kill grandma," and that he killed his grandfather so he wouldn't have to find out his wife was dead. Court psychiatrists diagnosed him with paranoid schizophrenia and sent him to Arascadero State Hospital to have a stay in the criminally insane unit.

While he was there social workers and California Youth Authority psychiatrists strongly disagreed with this diagnosis. They stated he had "personality trait disturbance, passive- aggressive type," he didn't show interference with thought, expression of delusions or hallucinations or evidence of bizarre thinking that would fit into the paranoid schizophrenia diagnosis. He was a model prisoner and was even trained by the staff to administer psychiatric tests to other prisoners. "He was a very good worker and this is not typical of a sociopath. He really took pride in his work." On December 18th, 1969 it was Ed's 21st birthday, his gift was being released on parole. He was released into the care of...his mother. It was against the recommendation of psychiatrists at the hospital.

Ed attended community college, he wanted to become a police officer, but because of his enormous size he wasn't eligible. He did spend a lot of time at a bar called The Jury Room, it was across the street from the Santa Cruz Courthouse. There he spoke with a lot of officers and was able to pick their brains about police work. The officers gave him the nickname of "Big Ed," later he got a job with the State of California Highway Department. During this time his relationship with his mother remained toxic and hostile, "My mother and I started right in on horrendous battles, just horrible battles, violent and vicious. I've never been in such a vicious verbal battle with anyone. I couldn't stand the thought of my mother and I doing these things. She insisted on it, and just over stupid things."

The same year he began his job he started dating a 16 year old high school student to whom he would later become engaged to. Also during this year he was hit by a car while out on his motorcycle. His arm was badly injured and he received a $15,000 settlement in the civil suit he filed. He was able to purchase a car with the settlement money and it was then that he began picking up hitchhikers, Ed stated he picked up around 150 girls, but let them all go peacefully.

By May of 1972 Ed was no longer able to suppress his violent urges. He ended up murdering 2 hitchhikers by the names of  Mary Ann Pesce and Anita Mary Luchessa. He handcuffed Mary Ann and locked Anita Mary in the trunk, he then stabbed and strangled Mary Ann, shortly after he killed Anita Mary in a similar manner. Ed later confessed that while handcuffing Mary Ann he "brushed the back of his hand against one of her breasts and it embarrassed him," he even said he apologized to her, despite murdering her minutes later. Ed put both of their bodies in his trunk and started heading back to his apartment, he was pulled over for a broken taillight, but because he was able to keep his cool nothing happened and he continued on his way. *When he brought the dead bodies back to his apartment he had sex with them, and...their severed heads. Then he would fully dismember them and dispose of their remains.*

September 14th, 1972, Ed picked up 15 year old student Aiko Koo who decided to hitchhike after missing her bus. He drove her to a remote area, pulling a gun on her, in the mix of everything Ed accidentally locked himself out of his car. He had gained her trust and SHE LET HIM BACK IN! He ended up killing her, putting her body in his trunk, going to a bar for a couple drinks then went back to his apartment. Where he did the same thing to her as he did the first 2 victims.

By January 7th, 1973 Ed had moved back in with his mother. He was driving around Cabrillo College campus when he picked up 18 year old Cindy Ann Schall. Same MO as the others, but this time he took the body back to his mothers house. He kept Cindy's body in a closet in his room, when his mother left for work the next day *he dismembered and decapitated her body in his mothers bathtub. He kept the head for several days, regularly having sex with it.* He then buried the head in his mothers garden, facing upward toward her bedroom. He later remarked that his mother "always wanted people to look up to her." Yikes! He threw the rest of her remains over a cliff.

After a heated argument with his mother on February 5th, 1973 he left the house and found 23 year old Rosalind Thorpe and 20 year old Alice Helen Liu. Same Mo yet again. He dumped their remains the next morning at Eden Canyon.

April 20th, 1973, his 11 month killing spree would come to an end, but not before killing the one woman/monster he had dealt with his entire life. This night he waited for Clarnell to come home from a party. She arrived home and got into bed to start reading a book, Ed comes into the room and she says "I suppose you're going to want to sit up all night and talk now," Ed replied "No, good night." He waited for her to fall asleep, he returned to her room then bludgeoned her with a claw hammer and then slit her throat with a knife. (This next part is pretty gruesome) *He decapitated her and engaged in irrumatio (a form of oral sex where a man thrusts his penis into someones else's mouth) with her severed head before using it as a dart board. He states he "put her head on a shelf and screamed at it for an hour, threw darts at it," and in the end "smashed her face in." He also cut out her tongue and larynx, throwing them in the garbage disposal, however it could not break down the tough vocal cords and ejected the tissue back into the sink "That seemed appropriate," Ed later stated, "as much as she'd bitched and screamed and yelled at me over so many years." He then had sex with his mother's corpse and hid it in a closet and went out to drink.* Upon returning from his much needed alcohol consumption he invited his mother's best friend Sara Hallett over to the house for dinner and a movie. He then strangled her to death when she arrived and spent the night with her decapitated body, he stuffed her corpse in the closet and left a note for police, Appx. 5:15 AM Saturday. No need for her to suffer any more at the hand of this horrible "murderous butcher." It was quick-asleep-the way I wanted it. Not sloppy and incomplete, gents. Just a "lack of time." I got things to do.

Ed left in Sara's car and drove until he arrived in Pueblo, Colorado, after not hearing any news on the radio about their murders he found a phone booth and called the police. He confessed to the murders, but they didn't believe him and told him to CALL BACK LATER. He called back later, but specifically asked to speak with an officer that he knew, he waited in his car for the police to show up. They arrived, took him into custody and he also confessed to the murders of the 6 students. They asked him why he turned himself in and he said "The original purpose was gone...It wasn't serving any physical or real or emotional purpose. It was just a pure waste of time...emotionally, I couldn't handle it much longer. Toward the end there, I started feeling the folly of the whole damn thing, and at the point of near exhaustion, near collapse, I just said to hell with it and called it all off."

Ed Kemper was found guilty on eight counts of murder and was sentenced to life in prison on November 9th, 1973, spending his time in the California Medical Facility state prison.

Image result for ed kemperHe was incarcerated in the same prison block as other notorious criminals such as Herbert Mullin and Charles Manson. Ed wasn't fond of Herbert, he stated " Mullin was just a cold-blooded killer...killing everybody he saw for no good reason." Ed also commented on the fact that his statement was hypocritical considering what he had done. Ed manipulated and physically intimidated Mullin who he nicknamed "Herbie," Ed stated Mullin "had a habit of singing and bothering people when somebody tried to watch TV, so I threw water on him to shut him up. Then, when he was a good boy, I'd give him peanuts. Herbie liked peanuts. That was effective, because pretty soon he asked permission to sing. That's called behavior modification treatment."

Ed is considered a model prisoner. He participated in a program known as "The Blind Project," where inmates created books on tape for the blind. Ed ran the program and has readings of several hundred books to his credit. He is in charge of scheduling other inmates' appointments with psychiatrists as well as being a skilled craftsman of ceramic cups. He has participated in a multitude of interviews, his interviews are notable for their contribution to understand the mind of serial killers. FBI profile John Douglas described Ed as "among the brightest prison inmates" Ed is upfront about his crimes and the nature of them, he stated he participated in interviews in hopes it would save others like himself from killing. "There's somebody out there that is watching this and hasn't done that- hasn't killed people, and wants to, and rages inside and struggles with that feeling, or is so sure they have it under control. They need to talk to somebody about it. Trust somebody enough to sit down and talk about something that isn't a crime. Thinking that way isn't a crime. Doing it isn't just a crime, it's a horrible thing, it doesn't know when to quit and it can't be stopped  easily once it starts." Ed is currently 70 years old and is happy with his life in prison.

Ed's interviews with John Douglas are featured prominently in the book "Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit." Netflix also has a series based off of this book called Mindhunter.

Whew! Thanks for sticking with me on this one! This case really peeks my interests due to the psychological aspect of it. How years of psychological and mental abuse starting at such a young age can potentially cause someone to do such heinous acts.
What are your thoughts about Ed Kemper? I would love to hear them! See you guys next week.
