Jazzy Axeman

Happy True Crime Thursday Folks!
Today we are taking it down South to The Big Easy, New Orleans, Louisiana!
Discussing the unsolved case of the Axeman murders

IStock

New Orleans 1918, the streets are filled with the sounds of Jazz music much like today, but it wasn't the city folk listening to the smooth sounds just for pleasure, it was to keep a crazed axe murderer at bay.

Image result for axeman lettersStarting in May 1918 the "Axeman" would claim his first victims, an Italian grocer named Joseph Maggio and his wife Catherine. They climbed into their bed the night of May 23, 1918, not knowing that soon a killer would break into their apartment. The Axeman cut the couple's throats with a straight razor before bashing in their heads with an axe. Joseph survived the attack, but died minutes after being discovered by his brothers Jake and Andrew Maggio. Catherine was already dead by the time they got there, her throat had been cut so deep that her head was nearly severed from her shoulders.

When the police arrived they ruled out that robbery was the motive behind the attacks, no valuables or money was taken. They also discovered that the murderer had left behind their bloody clothing, they had changed into a clean set of clothes before fleeing the scene. The bloody razor was found on the lawn of a neighboring property. They soon discovered that the razor belonged to Andrew Maggio, the brother. He owned his own barber shop and had told one his employees, Esteban Torres 2 days prior to the murders that he was removing the razor from the shop to have a nick honed from the blade. The brother lived in an adjoining apartment to his brothers residence and told police that he had heard strange moaning noises through the wall and that's when he went over to check on them. He said he didn't hear the attacks happening and blamed that on his level of intoxication that night, he had been out partying because he was soon departing with the Navy. He was the main suspect. but they were able to rule him out. Also discovered near the couples home was a message written in chalk that read "Mrs. Joseph Maggio will sit up tonight. Just like Mrs. Toney." Who's Mrs. Toney?

The Axeman's next victims were Louis Besumer and his mistress Harriet Lowe. They were attacked the early morning hours of June 27, 1918, in the quarters at the back his grocery store. Like the first victim Louis was the owner of a grocery story and was Italian. He was struck with a hatchet above his right temple. Harriet was hacked over the left ear, she was unconscious when police arrived. A driver of a bakery wagon discovered them when he was doing his routine delivery to the store at 7 am. The axe was found in the bathroom of the apartment and they discovered that it belonged to Louis himself. He later told police that he had been asleep when he was hit with the hatchet. Again no money or valuables were taken from the scene. After the arrest and subsequent release of an African- American suspect in the case, Harriet (in what was deemed a delirious state of mind) told police that Louis was a German spy. Later she claimed he was responsible for the June 27th attack. Louise was arrested and later released. Because of the outcome the press sensationalized the story. Harriet's face was partially paralyzed due to the severity of the attack. In August she went in and had a surgery done in hopes of repairing it, sadly she died 2 days later.

August 5th, 1918 Mrs. Anna Schneider was home alone, her husband worked nights. The 28 year old climbed in her bed to settle in for a good nights sleep, but soon after she awoke to a dark figure standing over her. Her face was bashed in repeatedly.  Shortly after midnight she was discovered by her husband who was returning home from work, her scalp had been cut open and her face was completely covered in blood. To make matters worse Anna was 8 months pregnant at the time. She survived the attack and just 2 days later she gave birth to her baby girl! One man was arrested on suspicion but he was soon released for lack of evidence. By this time investigators began to publicly speculate that the attack was in fact related to the previous incidents.

Image result for axeman lettersOn August 10th, just 5 days after Anna's attack, a man by the name of Joseph Ramano was attacked. He was an elderly Italian grocer that lived with his 2 nieces. The girls awoke to the sound of commotion in the adjoining room where their uncle stayed. The girls entered his room to find Joseph laying down with a serious blow to the head, they also saw the assailant fleeing the scene. They described him to police as having a darker complexion, heavy set and wore a dark suit and slouched hat. Joseph although seriously injured was able to walk to the ambulance once it arrived on scene, sadly he died just 2 days later due to the severe head trauma. The home was ransacked, yet no items were stolen. Police found a bloody axe in the backyard.

Soon panic settled into the city, residents were in constant fear that the Axeman would attack them next. Police starting getting an overwhelming amount of reports from citizens claiming to have seen the Axeman. Public statements were made by retired detective John Dantonio, he hypothesized that the man committing the murders was the same man who killed several individuals starting back in 1911. Between 1911 and 1912 several Italian grocers were murdered, He stated there were several similarities in the manner the crimes were committed. Going back to the chalk note left behind at the Maggio crime scene..In 1911 Tony Schiambra was one of those murdered alongside his wife...possibly known as Mrs. Tony...coincidence or possible tie in?  Dantonio also stated he believed the killer had dual personalities. One who was a normal, law-abiding citizen and the other that had the overwhelming desire to kill, the real life "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

Over the months, the attacks stopped, the fear slowly went away and neighborhoods returned to normal. That was until March 10, 1919, when the Axeman struck again.

Charles and Rosie Cortimiglia lived with their infant daughter Mary in a New Orleans Suburb. On the night of the 10th screams were heard coming from the household, a neighbor rushed across the street to investigate, he soon discovered that all 3 of them had been attacked. Rosie stood in the doorway with a serious head wound, in her arms were that of her beloved Mary, she was dead. Charles was lying on the floor and was bleeding profusely. The couple was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered that both of them suffered skull fractures. Nothing was stolen from their home. A bloody axe was found at the home on the back porch. The 2 of them survived.

On March 12, 1919 a letter was published in the newspapers from the person claiming to be the Axeman, below is a copy of what was said in the letter.

Hell, March 13, 1919
Esteemed Mortal of New Orleans:The Axeman

They have never caught me and they never will. They have never seen me, for I am invisible, even as the ether that surrounds your earth. I am not a human being, but a spirit and a demon from the hottest hell. I am what you Orleanians and your foolish police call the Axeman.
When I see fit, I shall come and claim other victims. I alone know whom they shall be. I shall leave no clue except my bloody axe, besmeared with blood and brains of he whom I have sent below to keep me company.
If you wish you may tell the police to be careful not to rile me. Of course, I am a reasonable spirit. I take no offense at the way they have conducted their investigations in the past. In fact, they have been so utterly stupid as to not only amuse me, but His Satanic Majesty, Francis Josef, etc. But tell them to beware. Let them not try to discover what I am, for it were better that they were never born than to incur the wrath of the Axeman. I don't think there is any need of such a warning, for I feel sure the police will always dodge me, as they have in the past. They are wise and know how to keep away from all harm.
Undoubtedly, you Orleanians think of me as a most horrible murderer, which I am, but I could be much worse if I wanted to. If I wished, I could pay a visit to your city every night. At will I could slay thousands of your best citizens (and the worst), for I am in close relationship with the Angel of Death.
Now, to be exact, at 12:15 (earthly time) on next Tuesday night, I am going to pass over New Orleans. In my infinite mercy, I am going to make a little proposition to you people. Here it is:
I am very fond of jazz music, and I swear by all the devils in the nether regions that every person shall be spared in whose home a jazz band is in full swing at the time I have just mentioned. If everyone has a jazz band going, well, then, so much the better for you people. One thing is certain and that is that some of your people who do not jazz it out on that specific Tuesday night (if there be any) will get the axe.
Well, as I am cold and crave the warmth of my native Tartarus and it is about time I leave your earthly home, I will cease my discourse. Hoping that thou wilt publish this, that it may go well with thee, I have been, am and will be the worst spirit that ever existed either in fact or realm of fancy.

--The Axeman

I mean is your mind as boggled as mine was reading this..

So, the people of New Orleans blared their Jazz music that night and no murders occurred.

Not until August 10, 1919. Steve Boca (surprisingly, but not so surprisingly was a grocer and Italian) awoke in the middle of the night to find a dark figure looming over his bed. Next thing he could remember was waking back up and discovering that his head had been cracked open. He ran over to his neighbors home where he lost consciousness again and collapsed. Nothing was taken from the home. He recovered from his injuries, but couldn't remember any specific details of what occurred.

September 3, 1919, 19 year old Sarah Laumann was discovered unconscious on her bed, she suffered a severe injury and was missing several teeth. A bloody axe was discovered on the front lawn of the building. She survived, but again couldn't recall details of her attack.

The last and final attack from the Axeman occurred the night of October 27, 1919. Mike Pepitone was found by his wife covered in his own blood. She was in a different room when she heard a noise coming from the bedroom, when she entered she saw a large axe-wielding man fleeing from the scene. She was unable to describe any specific characteristics of the man. Sadly Mr. Pepitone didn't survive and he left behind his wife and 6 children.

The Axeman was never caught, to this day the jazz loving murderers identity remains unknown.

Hope you all enjoyed this weeks story and I will see you all here again next Thursday!

Trip to the Beach

Happy True Crime Thursday!
Another week, Another True Crime Story!
I heard about this one on a Podcast I listen to and I decided I wanted to look into it some more.
Today we are traveling to Folly Beach in South Carolina.

Disclaimer: Today's blog does contain information about crimes that include kidnapping, murder and sexual assault of teenage girls.

On May 23, 1973 Sherri Clark, 14 and Alexis Latimer, 13 were wrapping up a trip to Folly Beach, they had been staying at a house that belonged to Alexis' parents. Alexis' family started cleaning up and packing in preparation to head home that afternoon. The girls told Mrs. Latimer that they were going to go for a walk on the dunes before leaving. They never returned.

Sherri on the left, Alexis on the right
I have been to Folly Beach myself and can say it's a nice quiet beach town just outside of Charleston. They have a great boardwalk, cute restaurants & shops and several rental homes, it's a family friendly area. Sadly, during this time it felt anything but safe.

Mrs. Latimer sent out Alexis' brothers to look for the girls, but no luck. Sherri's father joined  in the search, but still no trace of them. By dark they immediately went to report the girls as missing, but the Chief said they shouldn't worry, they probably are just being typical teenage girls and ran off, probably with some boys. The girls' parents knew that wasn't the case, they weren't the kind of girls to do that. It would be more than 2 weeks before the police took any action and began an investigation into the girls disappearance. During the months following the families frustration with police grew due to their lack of urgency. They became desperate and frantic. They handed out flyers and placed ads in local papers asking for the public's help in getting answers. A few months after the girls went missing Mrs. Latimer reached out to famed Dutch psychic Gerald Croiset, he examined pictures of the girls and drew a fairly accurate map of Folly Beach, complete with bus stops, even though he had never been there. He told the parents that the girls were dead and they should search the north area of the island near the Coast Guard station. A air search was conducted, but nothing came up.

September 19, 1973 comes around and a 19 year old woman meets a man at a party, the 2 of them went back to her apartment. Without warning, he savagely assaulted her. He pushed her to the floor, she tried to fight back, but he quickly tied and bound her to the bed. As she struggled he undressed and sat there watching her freak out. She then turned into a bad ass and said "Well, if all you wants is a piece of p***** come on. I got thing to do and places to go." The man then lost his erection, picked up his clothes and left. I'll tell you a little later what happened next, I don't want to give away to much to soon.

February 14, 1974. A teenage girl was walking home from the grocery store, she was walking down a dirt road in a wooded area. She was approached by a man with a gun, he tied her to a tree, gagged her and then started touching her inappropriately. The man was scared off when a passerby saw what was happening and came running over. The girl described him as a white male, dark hair, and in his 20's or 30's.

One week later 16 year old Mary Earline Bunch was last seen sitting on a bench right down the street from her home. Two pieces of key information here...First, the bench she was sitting on was only a  couple blocks away from the police station and secondly she was also the police chiefs daughter, the same chief that was handling the missing persons case of Sherri and Alexis. Now his daughter was also missing.

April 12, 1974 A Police Officer was at Folly Beach for a complaint received on the North end. While walking the beach he heard a call for help coming from a nearby vacant vacation rental. As he got closer he realized the cries were coming from beneath the home. He discovered three 16 year old girls bound and gagged, one had been able to slip her gag and cry out for help. The girls told the officer that they had ditched school in Summerville (30 miles away) to come to the beach. They had been lying on the beach sunbathing when they were approached by a man with a gun. He told the girls that he had killed before and if they didn't do what he wanted that he would kill them to. He forced them underneath the rental home that contained an outdoor shower, it was then that he tied them up and gagged them.  They were able to give police a detailed description of the man. He was Italian, in his late 20's early 30's, had a beard & mustache and dark hair. The next week a composite sketch was released to the public.

Four days after the incident involving the 3 girls occurred a gentlemen was walking his dog along Folly Beach in the same area, the dog suddenly began to frantically dig in one spot. So he walked over to see what he was going after, it was then that he noticed the area was bloody. He called the authorities and they came out to discover a shallow grave. In it were the remains of a female, her arms and legs still bound. Through dental records it was confirmed that the body was in fact the Chiefs daughter, Mary Earline Bunch.

Soon after the composite sketch was released the young woman attacked by the man she met at a party came forward. Here's the information I withheld earlier. She met this man at a party on a Naval Base, he was a Sailor. She had gone to the Naval authorities the next day after the attack to report what happened, but when she was told to go to local police she decided to drop it, she had been heavily intoxicated that night and thought it would go no where. When she saw the composite sketch she knew right then it was the same man that had attacked her.

Authorities were soon able to narrow it down to one suspect and that was 31 year old Petty Officer Richard Valenti. He lived in close proximity to where the crimes took place. They arrived at the home he shared with his wife and CHILDREN...he met them outside and put up no fight when they went to arrest him. He had shaved off his beard. He remained calm and showed no emotions. While police went throughout the home they found a bedspread that had been torn up and it matched the ligature marks of the girls he attacked perfectly.

Image result for Richard ValentiWithin an hour Valenti confessed to everything. He told police that when he abducted Mary he took her to the same house he took the three 16 yr. olds, hog tied her and choked her to death with rope then buried her body in the sand. He also told them that he took Sherri and Alexis there. He told the girls to take of their clothes, he tied them up with the torn up bedspread  and made them pose in various positions.  This next part was very difficult to read. He made them stand on chairs with a noose placed around their necks, the rope was tied to water pipes above their heads, he then kicked the chairs out from underneath them and pleasured himself while he watched them struggle and die.

He told police that he had fantasies of tying up young women since he was 6 years old. His wife even stated she knew her husband had an obsession with bondage and that he even attempted suicide on one occasion because of his desires. She had found several bondage pornographic magazines of her husbands, she even tried letting him tie her up. but it didn't work. He was found guilty and sentenced to 2 consecutive life sentences. He was eligible for parole after serving only 10 years, it was denied, but get this. He is eligible for parole every 2 years!!! Could you imagine being the families and going through that. Today he states that the terrible things that used to plague him don't anymore, because  Jesus saved him. He is still married. Both of them are sick individuals in my opinion.

This one was a tough one, I can't image what these girls were thinking and feeling. They thought they had their whole lives ahead of them. They didn't get the chance to go to prom, to graduate and go to college, to have careers or to get married and have children of their own. It's extremely sad.

Until next week.

Family Man

Happy True Crime Thursday!
I can't believe it's been a week already.
Today we are talking about family man turned murderer...
Christian Longo.

Christian, Wife MaryJane, Their Children Zachery, Sadie and Madison

Christian Michael Longo was born on January 23, 1974 in Michigan. He was raised in a strict Jehovah's Witness household and became very active within the church starting at a young age. He was trained in the door-to-door ministry that Jehovah's Witness members are well known for. It was at the church that he met MaryJane Baker. The two of them got married in 1993 when she was 25 and he was only 19. Unknown to MaryJane the  purchase of her engagement ring was the beginning of Christian's deceit, he stole money from the camera shop he worked at to pay for the ring. The elders at his church found out and they removed him from his church duties, but it wasn't reported to police.

Christian decided to set up his own construction cleaning business, it was successful at the beginning, but then he ran into debt. Christian had a taste for the finer things in life from the get go, but not the budget for it. He loved to take luxurious vacations, buy nice clothes and fast cars. MaryJane gave birth to their 1st son Zachery in 1997, this made their finances even more strained because MaryJane became a stay at home mom. Things didn't get better, but regardless their next 2 children arrived shortly after. They were swimming in credit card debt and the families cars were repossessed.

Christian did what any person would do when in financial despair... he set up fake addresses to reroute bill collectors, wrote checks to himself in clients names and created a fake drivers license. He took this license to a dealership, hopped in a car to take it for a test drive, drove it home and never returned it. Totally normal right? He hid all of this from his wife, but regardless of how slick he thought he was she started to grow suspicious. MaryJane soon discovered that Christian was being unfaithful, she found email evidence of this. When confronted Christian told her that he had no fun since they had been married.  Soon after, he was caught and charged for making counterfeit checks, he was given a light sentence of probation and restitution. After this the Church they belonged to found out about all of the sinful things Christian had been up to, so they kicked him out.

So what was next for Christian and his family? Well about 2 months after all was discovered he claimed he wanted to start a new and better life, with his family. They picked up and moved into a warehouse in Toledo, Ohio. Now some of you may be aware of this, but when you are on probation and you don't tell anyone that you are moving to another state that kinda makes you wanted on probation violation. And that's just what he became.

Early September 2001, Christian Longo walks into a vacation rental place in Yachats, Oregon with his family in tow. He states that he'd been traveling to Eugene on business and needed a safe place for his family. He settled on an $800 a month rental home just outside of Waldport. By September 24th Christian started working at a Starbucks coffee shop just inside the Newport Fred Meyers store. This is so crazy for me to read because I have been to that Fred Meyers and Starbucks many many times when visiting the Oregon Coast.

By the early fall MaryJane's family started to worry. It had been weeks since any of them had heard from her, her cellphone had been disconnected. Concerned, 3 of MaryJane's sisters met up in Ann Arbor and drove 40 minutes to Toledo, Ohio. Not knowing the family was in Oregon at that time. When they arrive to the gritty looking warehouse set right next to a meat-packing plant they didn't find their sister. It looked as though they had left in a hurry. Of course this worried the women enough to drive to the Toledo police station and file a missing persons report for MaryJane and the kids. The police were already looking for Longo, one day prior to the family leaving abruptly Toledo police recovered $55,00 in merchandise that was stolen from Michigan. The main suspect was Christian.

By November it had been 2 months since anyone had heard from MaryJane or Christian. They prayed the family was safe. Then MaryJane's mom got a card from MaryJane, postmarked Sioux Falls, S.D. it stated that things had not worked out for Christian in Toledo so they had moved, but didn't say where. She said Christian had sent out resumes and was taking an eight-week training program, but didn't say what kind of work. End of the note said "Love, MaryJane. P.S. I'll keep in touch."

Christian kept bailing on rental places they stayed at when it came to making payment. Anyone that came in contact with the family said that Christian did the majority of the talking and that MaryJane and the kids remained quite for the most part. Christian kept doing what he did best. Manipulating people.

Before I dive into the details regarding the next half of this story I do want to warn you that it does involve children and can be upsetting. Any story that involves children makes my blood boil. Sadly, these crimes do happen. I will give you a little psychological overview at the end.
On December 19, 2001 a man reported seeing the body of a small boy floating face down in the water near his home in Newport, Oregon. The boy was identified as 4 year old Zachery Longo. 3 days later in nearby waters divers found the body of 3 year old Sadie Ann Longo, she had been weighed down by a pillowcase full of rocks. On December 26th, 2 suitcases were found by police divers, inside one of them was the small body of 2 year old Madison Longo. In the other was the body of 34 year old MaryJane. Police were on the hunt to find the only family member unaccounted for, Christian Longo.

At this point Christian had already hopped on an airplane and made his way to Cancun, where he stayed in a Seaside resort. Not suspicious at all right? Well not only did he do this, but he also changed his identity. Christian was into reading the New York Times and always wanted to be a journalist, he decided to assume the identity of real life New York Times reporter Michael Finkel.  He was living it up as Mr. Finkle, he was getting drunk, hitting the beach, going to nightclubs and even romanced a German tourist. A weird twist in the story is that during the time he was posing as Michael, Michael himself was in the headlines for fabricating a story he had written and was getting fired and shamed out of journalism.

Back in the states it had become clear that Christian was involved in the murder of his family. The FBI placed him on their Ten Most Wanted list and were able to track him down in January 2002. The local police immediately handed him over.

Over the next year Christian kept insisting that yes he killed his wife and youngest daughter, but only because MaryJane had killed the 2 oldest children and being in the state of shock and rage he was in he strangled MaryJane. He claimed he then strangled baby Madison because he felt hopeless for her. Right...

After a month long trial in 2003, Christian was convicted of all charges and sentenced to death. He is still sitting on death row today.

He eventually confessed to killing Zachery and Sadie as well, he confessed this to none other than disgraced reporter Michael Finkle. Michael didn't know about his involvement until Christian was convicted. It was then that he became obsessed with the case and flew to Oregon to meet Christian face to face. It was then that Christian admitted he initially strangled MaryJane and Madison and then jammed their bodies into the luggage and loaded them into the trunk of his car. From there he grabbed sleeping Zachery and Sadie and put them into the car, he drove to a nearby bridge over Lint Slough, an inlet of the Alsea River. This next part is tough to hear. He then tied weighted pillowcases to his children's legs and tossed them into the water, they were still alive when he did this. He then tossed the suitcases in.

Ten years after the murders he wrote a letter, in the letter he states;

"I got up on the stand and essentially blamed my wife for everything. I was still stuck in a phase where I couldn't fathom the thought of me being capable of doing what I was convicted of."

"Studying what a psychologist said I was and came to terms with it, almost totally agreeing that he was right...his conclusion was the narcissistic personality disorder which he called 'compensatory'--basically self-centeredness related to a damaged core sense of self"

"I dream a few times a week about my daughters. They're usually happy and playing and it's pleasant. But my mind, even in the dream, knows the reality. And it always switches to an image of my son that haunts me for the rest of that dream state. Sometimes, I get back to sleep, a lot of times I don't. And unless I get distracted pretty quickly, the image sticks and I'm haunted throughout the day until it fades. I rarely dream of my wife and I don't know what that means. I think it's from a detachment from her long before the end--which I know sounds callous, but I'm being honest."

Is your blood boiling like mine was while writing this?

So here's a little psychology behind the different types of Family Annihilators. There isn't one specific type of person that chooses to kill their family. In general, these people are fragile and unable to cope with humiliation. They're unable to make appropriate decisions when they are burdened by anxiety, rage or depression.

Below are the different types of Family Annihilators, this is based upon a study where they analyzed 2 decades worth of cases involving men who had killed their families. They came up with 4 types of annihilators. It was published in the Howard Journal of Criminal Justice.

*Self-righteous: The killer seeks to locate blame for his crimes upon the mother who he holds responsible for the breakdown of the family. This may involve the killer phoning his partner before the murder to explain what he is about to do. For these men, their breadwinner status is central to their idea of the ideal family.
*Disappointed: This killer believes his family has let him down or has acted in ways to undermine or destroy his vision of ideal family life. An example may be disappointment that children are not following the traditional religious or cultural customs of the father.
*Anomic: In these cases the family has become firmly linked in the mind of the killer to the economy. The father sees family as the result of his economic success, allowing him to display his achievements. However, if the father becomes an economic failure, he sees the family as no longer serving this function.
*Paranoid: Those who perceive an external threat to the family. This is often social services or the legal system, which the father fears will side against him and take away the children. Here the murder is motivated by a twisted desire to protect the family.
In all of these cases masculinity and perceptions of power sets the background for the crimes. The family role of the father is central to their ideas of masculinity and the murders represent a last ditch attempt to perform a masculine role.

If you would like to read more about Christian Longo and his frame of mind there is also a great article up here.
These cases are always very difficult to digest. I really can't come up with the words to end this weeks blog on a positive note.
I will see you all next week.

Yogurt Shop Murders

Happy True Crime Thursday!  Today's case is the unsolved yogurt shop murders that occurred in Austin, Texas. Lets go to the evening of D...
